Even though Second Life is basically a game, it is still something completely different from other games.
It is like virtual community experience combined with gaming.
You could almost say that there you have online games and Second Life.
It's unique because you have no limitations,
you can be whatever you want, build houses or skyscrapers, buy land or entire islands, even change your body and appearance if you wish.
You can also make real money in this virtual world. Everything there is user created.
As said, you can make everything but not as good as someone else can. So you can have it, but for a price.
That's how some people make real money there, cause Linden dollars can be exchanged for real dollars. Interesting isn't it?
You can get inside with registering a free account but soon you'll find out that you need a premium account to buy land for example which may be needed to open a store or build a house. To make money, you can sell or do something, like clothes, art or whatever comes to your mind. This, I mean possibility to make something and keep it or sell it later became one of the main motivators of Second Life's fast development. Although virtual, these goods became sort of real because they have real value.
First you need to create your character or avatar. The best thing is, you can twist it and change it any way you wish. From your body to your clothes. As a newcomer, you start at the Orientation Island where you learn basic movement and other basic info and then you go to the welcome center and that is your starting point. As in real world you may wish to do the same things, I mean building a house or finding job but obviously you don't have to, because you don't have to support yourself as in real life and so you can enjoy yourself instead.
There is nothing to achieve in the sense of a goal but there may be aims you give to yourself. You can simply chat with the other people or build something or anything else. When I say so I always remember a story about Anshe Chung which made a small fortune over there and she even employs people in the real world!!
